Washougal, Wash. – The Northern Pikeminnow looks harmless enough, but they are considered seriouspredators and have a voracious appetite for salmon fry. By paying anglers to catch the Northern Pikeminnow, wildlife protection agencies are hoping More

Ripp Takes the Helm of Port of Camas-Washougal

December 17, 2007 – The Port of Camas-Washougal Board of Commissioners officially announced the appointment of David R. Ripp as the executive director of the Port of Camas-Washougal, with a start date of January 7, 2008.  Ripp brings over 13 years of port leadership experience, having served as the executive director of the Port of Woodland, Wash., handling a wide range of property development, construction management, capital funding, and government affairs.

“I am thrilled by this opportunity to work with the Port of Camas-Washougal commission and staff,” said Ripp.  “I am impressed by the breadth of port activities, and I am looking forward to working with the communities of Camas and Washougal to promote the port’s mission of creating jobs and economic development.”

Under the Port Commissioners’ direction, Ripp, with a 12-member port staff, will be responsible for the overall operations, capital improvement, and management of the Port’s 400-acre industrial park, a 79-hangar general aviation airport, and a 350-slip pleasure boat marina.   Ripp will also be heavily involved in the port’s various key capital projects including the East Industrial Park rezone assessment; RiverWalk waterfront redevelopment project; implementation of the Airport Layout Plan; SR-14 impact study; and completion of Captain William Clark Park operations.

“We welcome Dave Ripp to the Port of Camas-Washougal, and we are looking forward to many successes under Dave’s leadership,” said Port Commission President, Alan Hargrave.  “We went through a thorough executive search and interview process led by Byron Hanke, and I am confident we selected the best candidate to take the helm of our community’s port.”

During the four-month executive search process, Byron Hanke, a port consultant and former Port of Vancouver executive director, has been overseeing port operations in addition to leading the executive search.  “It is always difficult to select from a number of excellent candidates,” said Hanke. “Dave will be taking the helm of a port that has significant economic growth opportunities for this community.”

Prior to the Port of Woodland, Ripp successfully managed a Norwest Financial branch office in Stockton, California, for four years before returning to his roots in the Pacific Northwest.  Ripp also spent some time working part-time as a welder in Woodland and Bellingham between 1980 to 1990.

Ripp participates actively in the Washington Public Ports Association (WPPA), and he is the current chair of the WPPA Public Relations Committee.  Ripp currently serves on the boards of Pacific Northwest Waterways Association (PNWA); Columbia River Channel Coalition (CRCC); and Columbia River Channel Improvement Project (ICRIP).  Previously, Ripp also served on the Cowlitz Economic Development Council and the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Council of Governments.  He was a past president of the Woodland Rotary Club.

Born and raised in Woodland, Wash., Dave graduated from Western Washington University, Bellingham, Wash., with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration.  Ripp, and his wife, Sue, have two grown sons in college, Cory, 22, and Scott, 19. Dave and Sue enjoy outdoor sports, and are active on the local Specialized River City Bicycle Racing Team since 2001 and the Tireless Velo Team since 2007.  The Ripps currently reside in Camas, Washington.

Port of Camas-Washougal Participates in Pikeminnow Reward Program
The total harvest for 2007 was 191,154 reward-sized Northern Pikeminnow.  These fish are a major predator of juvenile salmon and steelhead in the Columbia and Snake Rivers, and this program encourages recreational anglers to deplete the Pikeminnow population by offering monetary rewards. Information on the 2008 season will be available in the spring and posted to the website. Read about it in the November 2007 newsletter here.

March 5, 2007 – TALL SHIPS – The Grays Harbor Historical Seaport has changed their 2007 Voyage Schedule for the tall ships “Lady Washington: and “The Hawaiian Chieftain.” Their current plan is to stay longer in Portland for the Rose Festival. As a result, they will not be coming into Camas-Washougal this year.

This worthwhile – and educational – experience is still available by visiting one of the locations listed below. It is our hope that the Port of Camas/Washougal will be included in next year’s Voyage Schedule.

Here is their new schedule:
Portland - 1 June - 10 June
Vancouver- 11 June - 13 June
Rainier- 14 June
Astoria- 15 June - 20 June
Ilwaco- 21 June

SR-14 Widening (updated 2-12-07 )
The Washington State Dept of Transportation (WSDOT) has essentially settled on constructing a full interchange at Union, closing the 2nd St access and modifying the 6th St access to a right in/right out intersection. The Governor has included $17 million in her transportation budget to combine with the $40 million already appropriated to complete these projects. It is hoped that work will begin in 2010.

WSDOT is currently engineering these projects and looking at impacts on surface streets, sound issues etc. This project will get several tweaks as time progresses.
