Public Access To Information

In the state of Washington, laws exist to ensure that the government agencies are "open" and that the public has a right to access certain records and information (unless protected by RCW 42.17.310).

These laws are the Open Public Meetings Act of 1971 and the Public Disclosure Act.

Open Public Meetings Act of 1971 (RCW 42.30)

Establishes policy for public meetings of governing bodies of state and local government agencies. (42.17.250)

Establishes policy for the disclosure of public records and the public's right to access such records.
